Dirty air in an RV sucks! Clean it up.

It’s critical that the air in your RV is clean.  Air is vital for a number of reasons.  One… we need it to live, duh! It has major impact on our health, and it has the ability to shift our overall mood.  In an RV there are a lot of things that can go wrong with our air.

Here are the major concerns:

  • Carbon Monoxide– you have a tow vehicle pumping out fumes less than 5 feet away from the nearest window.  Additionally, if/when you are in an RV park you’ll have other vehicles spewing exhaust near your home on wheels.
  • Propane– just the other day my 3-year old thought it would be fun to play with the knobs on the stove.  This led to us fleeing the rig and running all the fans for about 2 hours.
  • Mold– if your rig get’s it… it sucks!  Be prepared to rip out floors, walls, ceilings, and everything else.  Mold is the slow silent killer.  Remember, you are showering, cooking and breathing in a smaller more confined space that doesn’t circulate air the way a traditional home would.
  • Allergies– we have WAY more dust in our RV than we ever had in our Stick & Brick house.  Waking up with puffy, itchy eyes and a runny nose is no fun.

So here are some simple solutions plus some added bonus ideas to support cleaner, fresher, and safer air in your rig.

  1. Carbon Monoxide Sensor/Alarm get one and make sure you check the batteries every month.  This is a life saver… literally!!
  2. Dehumidifier– depending on where you roam… and the time of year you travel, there is a strong likelihood that you will need to monitor the humidity levels in your trailer.  I was blown away with how much moisture this thing was able to pull out of the air. Also, make sure you have a digital thermometer with humidity gauge.
  3. Upgrade your vent fan(s)- We installed a MaxxAir Fan.  Super easy to install and it’s been a complete game changer.  The stock ceiling fan was about 4 inches in diameter… the MaxxAir blade is close to 12 inches.  Additionally, it has a built-in thermostat and rain sensor.  It can cycle all the air in our rig in about 5 min.  The biggest advantage is when my bulldog is super gassy… we can vacuum that stench lickety-split!
  4. Plants- most people don’t think about bringing plants into their RV’s.  They clean our air on this planet… you should probably have a few in your living space.  I recommend Aloe Vera, Golden Pothos, and a Snake Plant.  Having a snake plant makes you bad ass.
  5. Diffuser my wife loves to diffuse organic essential oils.  Rather than burning incense, which will leave a film on your belongings, I recommend getting a diffuser and some high quality oils.  Your home will smell much better, your health will improve… and who know’s, if you get a strong aphrodisiac you might even get lucky (I recommend Doterra).
  6. Hepa Air Filter we use one to help cut down on dust and dander.  Additionally, it doubles as a white noise machine while sleeping.
  7. Quality Vacuum– we have a Dyson DC39.  It helps suck up all the dust and dirt that accumulates.  Strongest suck of any vacuum. It sucks!
