Tiny House Community in Colorado… not sure I’m a fan.

I have some mixed feelings regarding this Tiny House Community being built.  A 200 Unit Tiny Home Community is being built-in Colorado.  This will be a 100% rental unit community (in my opinion they should be for sale… wondering if there’s some legal issue with selling the units, or is this an opportunistic plight at new age rentals).  This will be the largest Tiny Home community in the US and will be built on 19 aces along the Arkansas River.

Some interesting tidbits…

  • All the homes will have permanent foundations.
  • All the tiny homes are being built by the same manufacturer (Sprout Tiny Homes).
  • The rental price monthly will be $700-$1450 and this will include utilities. NONE OF THEM ARE FOR SALE!
  • The community itself is going to have 96 storage spaces… doesn’t that defeat the purpose of going minimalistic?!

Based on the structure and basis of this build, it feels like an investor(s) are jumping on the bandwagon of “Tiny Living”… but they’ve turned it into an apartment complex for a minimalist.  In reality it’s more land usage and wasted space compared to an actual apartment.  Why not allow these to be purchased?  Why are they being dropped on permanent foundations?  Why do they have huge space designated to storage facilities?  Why only 1 manufacturer?  Why not open things up to allow for creativity and ingenuity?

At the end of the day I’m stoked that people will be living in smaller structures with a smaller impact than a conventional home… I just wish this had been thought through a bit more regarding their consumer base and the overall impact to the planet.
